At its September 10th meeting, the Sigourney Community School District Board of Education approved a resolution to place a bond referendum on the ballot for Tuesday, November 4, 2025.
If approved by voters, the referendum will authorize the district to issue up to $9.9 million in General Obligation bonds to address urgent facility needs at Sigourney Junior/Senior High School. Proposed improvements include upgrades to safety systems, accessibility enhancements, critical infrastructure modernization, and interior renovations to support student learning and well-being.
“This plan is focused, essential, and built from months of community input,” said Superintendent Kevin Hatfield. “The Board has listened and developed a practical, thoughtful, comprehensive improvement plan for the Jr. Sr. High School. It ensures our school remain safe, accessible, and efficient for current and future generations of Sigourney students.”
A Plan Shaped by the Community
The proposed facility plan is the result of extensive community engagement, including surveys, meetings, and the work of the Sigourney Community Facilities Advisory Committee II (SCFAC II)—a group of 33 residents who studied district needs and helped shape the priorities for this bond proposal. Input from staff and students was also integral in shaping the plan.
The bond referendum focuses on five core priorities:
● Safety & Security – Secure entrance and updated fire alarm systems
● Accessibility – Renovated restrooms and doorways to meet ADA standards
● Efficient Facilities – Modernized mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
● Student Support – Expanded entry area to include dedicated student services
● Community-Driven – Every element is based on direct input from the Sigourney community
Project Scope Highlights
The proposed updates would bring critical improvements to the Junior/Senior High School, including:
● New secure front entry with pass-through visitor check-in and student services area
● ADA-compliant restrooms and doors
● Ventilation improvements for better airflow with option for future cooling capacity
